IN THE PATTERN SHOP – HERE

This is our first official week of summer vacation and I have a new Women’s pattern for you just in time for the warm weather coming your way, assuming it’s summer where you are. This is a super easy style to wear and hopefully a great basic for your summer wardrobe and a great layering piece. Before I mention any more about the Pony Tank, I’d love to give a huge thank you to Jill of Kneesocksandgoldilocks and her husband Toomanycameras for sending me these gorgeous shots! My jaw seriously hit the floor! Make sure you are following Jill’s Instagram account for more stunning photos and sewing inspiration.

The Pony Tank pattern is a knit A-line tank top and dress with a curved hem. This pattern is designed to be fitted through the bust but loose through the body and hips. I designed the armhole to be higher than most ready to wear tanks I own that often end up exposing my bra, which is annoying. The v-neck is not too low but gives a nice shape when layering. The dress is designed to hit right above the knee.

Now let’s talk a little bit about fabric. The recommended fabrics are Rayon Jersey, Bamboo Jersey, Modal Jersey – with 70% stretch and good recovery. I’ve sewn samples in several different fabrics and the fit is always a little different. To give you a little bit of inspiration I’m linking to some of the fabrics I’ve sewn with. These are not affiliate links, just fabrics I’m happy to recommend!

Indiesew Fabrics
Black | Olive Stripe | Wineberry

Right as I was thinking I needed to order fabric for my photo samples I saw that Allie from Indiesew posted Rayon Spandex in her shop. I purchased some right away and I am so glad I did. This fabric is amazing. Indiesew is known for curating really great quality fabric and this Rayon Spandex has great weight and awesome recovery. It just feels really luxurious and elevates the look and feel of this tank. I would say it’s my favorite fabric I have used for the Pony Tank so far.

Finch Sewing Studio
Mustard | Orchid | Coral Red

I love shopping on Etsy for fabric and as I was searching for the new April Rhodes collections I found Finch Sewing Studio. I bought this mustard Rayon Lycra and I love the color and weight of this fabric. The quality is awesome and it’s a really great match for this pattern making for a perfect-fitting tank. The mustard is sold out but there are a few other jewel colors that would be really pretty.

Gran Paino – Heritage Collection | Mesa Grande | Meadow Dreams Pure

Cotton spandex is not a recommended fabric; however, I wanted to sew a sample to show you the difference in fit and drape. Cotton spandex will work but there are a few things you should know when choosing this fabric. Since there is not as much stretch the armhole will end up higher than designed. The drape of the body is also different, you can see there are fewer folds in the torso area. However this knit is more stable and easier to sew with, so that’s a bonus. I am in love with the new April Rhodes Heritage fabric collection. I was excited to use the Gran Paino Knit also purchased from Finch Sewing Studios. I have included a few other art gallery knits that I would love to use to make more Pony Tanks or any knit top!

As far as sewing, the pattern is listed as ADVANCED BEGINNER sewing level with the most difficult sewing steps being: sewing the V-Neck and hemming the Rayon Jersey. I’ve done my best to add additional steps to give you a fool-proof, perfect, v-neck. I highly suggest using fusible hem tape when sewing with rayon jersey. I had never used it before but I received a sample of Heat n Bond Soft Stretch fusible hem tape in Lite when I was at SNAP Conference. I used it for most of my samples and it was really helpful. Overall I consider this pattern to be a pretty quick sew. It doesn’t take up too much fabric and these tanks are kind of addicting to make.
